Telecom Egypt, one of the largest subsea cable operators in North Africa, has signed an agreement with Power Sub Link to construct the Sharm El Sheikh-Taba subsea cable, extending the Red Sea Subsea Festoon Cable System to Taba.

A press release issued by Telecom Egypt frames the cable as a vital step in completing connectivity between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean. The cable will run for approximately 200 km and have a capacity of around 5 petabits per second. The system is expected to be ready for service in the fourth quarter of 2027.

“This project aligns with our new strategy, which aims to maximize the Company’s role in digital infrastructure and strengthen its position regionally and internationally. The Sharm-Taba cable is another significant milestone in the development of Telecom Egypt’s international infrastructure, particularly its subsea infrastructure in Sinai, strengthening route diversity, resilience, and capacity,” said Tamer El Mahdi, Telecom Egypt Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.

“It advances a new eastern digital corridor connecting the Red Sea and the Mediterranean through the Sinai Peninsula, reinforcing our strategy of leveraging Egypt’s unique geographic position at the crossroads of three continents,” the CEO added.

The addition of the Sharm El Sheikh-Taba subsea cable will extend connectivity between Suez, Zafarana, Ras Ghareb, Sharm El Sheikh, and Taba, expanding Telecom Egypt’s subsea infrastructure across the Red Sea and Sinai. Under the agreement, Power Sub Link will implement the Sharm El Sheikh-Taba subsea cable.

“Together with Telecom Egypt, we are not simply delivering subsea infrastructure; we are helping shape the next generation of global connectivity. By developing a resilient Red Sea bypass, we reinforce Egypt’s position as a strategic gateway between continents, strengthen the security and continuity of international communications, and create new digital corridors of lasting global significance,” said Byron Skaftouros, Power Sub Link Managing Director.

“The development of the new subsea cable further reinforces the role of Sinai as an important component of Egypt’s digital infrastructure by expanding its subsea and terrestrial infrastructure. The Ministry is committed to strengthening Egypt’s position as a global connectivity hub between East and West, and to continuing the development of its international digital infrastructure to support global data traffic and meet the growing demand for secure, efficient, and diverse international data transmission,” said Raafat Hendy, Egypt’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology.

Egypt is one of Africa’s most connected markets. As of June 2026, Arizton Advisory & Intelligence reports that there are 17 operational subsea cables landing in Egypt with six other cables under development. The country continues to invest in connectivity, reinforcing its role as a gateway linking Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
