OpenAI, Meta Platforms Explore Potential Partnerships With Indian Reliance Industries To Expand AI Offerings

OpenAI and Meta Platforms have engaged in separate discussions with India’s Reliance Industries about potential partnerships aimed at expanding artificial intelligence (AI) services within the country. According to a report from technology news site The Information on Saturday, these talks could pave the way for deeper collaboration in AI distribution and development.

One possible avenue being explored is a partnership between Reliance Jio, the telecom arm of Reliance Industries, and OpenAI to distribute ChatGPT in India. This collaboration could enhance the accessibility of OpenAI’s advanced AI tools for Indian consumers and businesses, sources familiar with the matter indicated.

    Low Price for ChatGPT Subscription

The report also revealed that OpenAI has been considering a significant reduction in the price of its ChatGPT subscription, possibly lowering it to just a few dollars a month from the current $20. However, it remains unclear whether OpenAI has discussed this potential price drop with Reliance.

Additionally, Reliance is exploring ways to sell OpenAI’s models to enterprise clients through an application programming interface (API). The conglomerate has also been in talks about hosting and operating OpenAI’s models locally, which would allow for the storage of customer data within India, thus adhering to data sovereignty regulations.

    Massive Data Center

As part of its growing AI ambitions, Reliance has discussed using a massive, upcoming data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat, to host both Meta and OpenAI’s AI models. This data center, expected to be the largest in the world, will play a key role in supporting the company’s infrastructure as it ramps up its AI capabilities.

Neither Meta Platforms nor OpenAI provided comment on the report, and Reliance Industries has not responded to inquiries about the discussions.

Reliance Industries, led by Mukesh Ambani, is one of India’s largest and most diversified conglomerates, with interests spanning petrochemicals, refining, oil and gas exploration, telecommunications, retail, and green energy.

    Meta AI

It is worth noting that Meta is preparing to launch its own standalone AI chatbot, dubbed Meta AI, in the second quarter of 2025, as the company seeks to establish itself as a leading force in artificial intelligence, according to multiple media reports published this month.

The upcoming app is part of Meta’s broader strategy to rival competitors like OpenAI, led by Sam Altman, and Alphabet, Google’s parent company. Sources close to the matter revealed to CNBC that the new app will be a key element in Meta’s AI ambitions for the year, aiming to position the company as a significant player in the space.

While the Meta AI chatbot debuted in 2023 as a virtual assistant powered by large language models, this new release will be a standalone application, separate from Meta’s existing platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. With this move, Meta looks to carve out its own niche in the rapidly expanding AI market.

The company’s venture into AI comes at a time when tech giants are heavily investing in advanced AI to shape the future of digital communication and services.
