On June 29, 2007, the world crossed a digital Rubicon. The launch of Apple’s first iPhone didn’t just introduce a new product—it marked a turning point in how humans would live, work, and communicate for decades to come.

First unveiled by Apple CEO Steve Jobs at Macworld in San Francisco on January 9, 2007, the iPhone was described by Jobs as a groundbreaking fusion of “a widescreen iPod with touch controls, a revolutionary mobile phone, and a breakthrough Internet communications device.” His announcement sent shockwaves through an industry then ruled by the likes of Nokia, BlackBerry, and Motorola.

On launch day, all 164 Apple Stores in the United States remained open until midnight. Long lines snaked around the blocks, with eager customers—some of whom had camped out for days—hoping to be among the first to own the device.

The iPhone debuted at $499 for the 4GB model and $599 for the 8GB version. Despite skepticism from some tech analysts over its steep price and lack of a physical keyboard, the numbers spoke for themselves: more than 270,000 units sold in the first week, and one million within 74 days.

With its full touchscreen interface—eschewing a physical keypad entirely—the iPhone was nothing short of revolutionary. It quickly became more than a phone; it was a platform that redefined personal computing and catapulted Apple toward becoming the world’s most valuable company.

The iPhone also laid the groundwork for what would become the “app economy.” When the App Store launched the following year, it empowered millions of developers to build new services and businesses at a global scale.

The first-generation iPhone featured a 3.5-inch display with a 480-by-320-pixel resolution, a 2-megapixel rear camera, and storage options of 4GB or 8GB. It ran on iPhone OS (later renamed iOS) and supported GSM and EDGE networks—though it lacked support for 3G or video recording. Its gesture-based interface, including pinch-to-zoom and swipe navigation, was widely imitated but rarely matched.

Among the quirks of its origin story: Gregory Packer became the first official iPhone customer after waiting in line for 110 hours. The limited 4GB model, later discontinued, has become a coveted collector’s item—some auctioned for over $190,000. And in a late-stage design decision, Jobs famously insisted on replacing the original plastic screen with glass just six weeks before launch after noticing scratches on a prototype.

Since that momentous day, Apple has sold more than 2.3 billion iPhones. What was once a handheld curiosity has become a vital extension of modern life. Features we now take for granted—apps, swipe-to-unlock, high-quality mobile photography—can all trace their roots back to that disruptive summer morning.
