Elon Musk Sells X (Formerly Twitter) To His AI Company xAI In $33 BLN Deal

Tech billionaire Elon Musk announced on Friday that he has sold the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, to his artificial intelligence company xAI in a significant all-stock deal valued at $33 billion. Musk had acquired the platform just over two years ago.

The transaction involves two privately held companies, which means they are not obligated to publicly disclose their financial details.

In a post on X, Musk stated that this move will “unlock immense potential by blending xAI’s advanced AI capability and expertise with X’s massive reach.” However, it remains unclear what specific changes users of the platform can expect following this acquisition.

Twitter to X

Musk acquired Twitter in October 2022 for approximately $44 billion. Following the acquisition, he made significant changes to the platform, including content moderation policies, subscription services, and organizational restructuring. In July 2023, Musk rebranded Twitter as “X,” reflecting his vision of transforming the platform into an “everything app,” which would integrate various services beyond social media.

xAI

Founded by Musk in July 2022, xAI aims to develop AI-based technologies while ensuring they are safe and beneficial for humanity. The company focuses on creating advanced AI systems and addressing concerns about ethical AI development. Musk has expressed his belief that AI could pose risks if not managed properly, highlighting the importance of responsible AI research and implementation.

The Acquisition

The recent announcement that Musk sold X to xAI for $33 billion signifies a strategic alignment between the two companies. Musk envisions that merging the capabilities of xAI with the vast user base of X will boost the platform’s functionality and create new opportunities for innovation. However, as both companies are privately held, specific details about the deal and its implications for X’s users remain unclear.
