Amr Talaat, Egypt’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology, stated that Egypt plans to double the local production of smartphones during the years 2025 and 2026.
Talaat mentioned during his meeting with a group of Egyptian journalists that the volume of locally manufactured smartphones reached 3 million units in 2024, with plans to increase that number to 9 million phones by 2026.
He added that the communications ministry had convinced 4 out of the 5 largest smartphone manufacturers to establish factories in Egypt, revealing that discussions are underway with one or two additional companies to join the list of local manufacturers in 2025.
Companies like Samsung, Nokia, Vivo, and Xiaomi have already started local smartphone production, and it is expected that Oppo and Realme will join the list of manufacturers in Egypt through a single factory that will produce phones for both companies.
The Minister of Communications also revealed that Egypt is working towards becoming a regional hub for smartphone manufacturing by attracting companies involved in the supply chain industries.
He pointed out that it was essential to increase the scale of local manufacturing to attract companies that produce components such as screens, batteries, accessories, and more.
