Chinese Baidu Unveils ERNIE 4.5 and X1 To Compete in AI Race

In a bid to stay ahead in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence (AI) landscape, Chinese tech giant Baidu has introduced two new AI models: ERNIE 4.5 and X1.

ERNIE 4.5 is designed with “exceptional multimodal understanding” solution, offering enhanced language skills, better comprehension, improved generation, stronger logic, and advanced memory capabilities. The model is also noted for its high emotional intelligence (EQ), allowing it to accurately interpret internet memes and satirical cartoons.

A closer look at ERNIE 4.5 and X1

The launch of ERNIE 4.5 positions Baidu as one of China’s first tech giants to create a chatbot similar to ChatGPT. While the model claims to offer performance comparable to GPT-4, Baidu has faced challenges in achieving widespread adoption of its ERNIE large language model due to stiff competition in the field.

Meanwhile, Baidu highlights X1 as a model with “superior understanding, planning, reflection, and evolution capabilities.” It is also described as the first deep-thinking AI that can autonomously utilize tools.

The Rise of Multimodal AI Systems

Multimodal AI systems, like Baidu’s ERNIE 4.5, are gaining popularity as they can process and integrate various types of data—text, images, video, and audio—seamlessly. These systems can convert content between different formats with ease, which significantly boosts their versatility.

This trend is further propelled by Chinese AI start-up DeepSeek, which has introduced AI models claiming to match or even exceed the performance of leading Us models—at a fraction of the cost.
