Augmented reality transforms a visit to the Grand Egyptian Museum into an adventure in the time of the pharaohs
The Grand Egyptian Museum is preparing to unveil a groundbreaking digital experience — the first of its kind in Egypt — that uses mixed reality headsets combining cutting-edge technology with the timeless allure of ancient Egyptian history. This innovation will take visitors on an interactive journey through the corridors of ancient civilization, as if they have traveled back thousands of years to the era of kings and queens.

Mixed Reality Brings Egyptian Antiquities to Life
Engineer Mohamed Mohy, a virtual transformation expert, told Extra News that the new experience marks a major leap in the world of museums. The smart headset allows users to view interactive information, images, and videos related to each artifact, accompanied by immersive audio-visual effects that make visitors feel completely immersed in the atmosphere of ancient Egypt.

Blending Reality with Advanced Technology
Mohy explained that the headsets operate using Mixed Reality (MR) technology, which merges the real-world elements inside the museum with digital enhancements such as holographic images, audio clips, and explanatory videos. This combination transforms a traditional museum visit into a rich, interactive, and educational experience, adding depth and excitement to every step of the tour.

3D Scanning and Digital Design Technologies
The virtual transformation expert added that the project relies on 3D scanning of the exhibits using laser scanners and high-resolution cameras, alongside digitally reconstructing vanished archaeological sites through advanced design software. These digital models are then integrated with multimedia elements — text, audio, images, and videos — to create a highly realistic and immersive experience for visitors.
Toward the Era of Virtual Tourism and the Metaverse
Mohy highlighted that the world is now moving toward virtual tourism within the framework of the metaverse era, emphasizing that these technologies could open new economic horizons for Egypt by exporting digital tourism experiences to audiences worldwide. This, he noted, would help boost national income and strengthen Egypt’s global cultural promotion efforts.
Technology in the Service of Heritage
He concluded by stressing that modern technologies will not replace traditional tourism, but rather complement and enhance it. These innovations provide a preview or guided digital experience for tourists before their actual visit, positioning Egypt as one of the pioneering countries using technology to preserve and promote human heritage and civilization.
